SHTC assistant teacher, Pat Bettridge introduced me to Turmeric "Golden Paste" over a year ago. I take a big dollop in warm milk every evening before bed, and sometmes dueing the day too. Not only is it amazingly good for you but it tastes very yummy too - especially with a teaspoon of honey!
"A teaspoon a day keeps arthritis, diabetes and cancers at bay!"
The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and detoxing properties of Turmeric have been the subject of recent studies into how it can be used to prevent andtreat Alzheimer’s and cancer, and more.
Chronic inflammation is at the root of many diseases. Curcumin, - *the 'magic' compound contained in GOOD QUALITY turmeric , has been found to be just as effective as many anti-inflamatory medicines (1)
Researchers have found that curcumin* boosts the levels of BDNF (a growth hormone) and can prevent ot even reverse many brain diseases especially those related to aging such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons (2)
Recent reearch is showing that Turmeric may be one mother earths natural anti-cancer food. Not only can it prevent cancer growth, but inhibits the development and spread as well.

A teaspoon a day stimulates the gallbladder, reducing bloating and prevents inflammation of the digestive organs. However, when suffering from a gallbladder disease consult your doctor before taking (4)
Curcumin has shown to reduce LDL (or bad) cholesterol, prevent blood clotting, and remove plaque build-ups in the arteries. (5) It also lowers blood pressure -again check with your doctor if on any heart or blood pressure medication before taking Turmeric in large quantities or if you already have low blood pressure.
A large amount of people claim that Turmeric eases their condition, mainly becaause of its anti inflammatory properties, which also reduces pain. Some have said it works better than the drugs perscribed by their doctor and without any of the associated side effects. - again have a chat with yourdoctor before stopping your medication and tell him/ her you'd like to give this a go for a month to see how you go. Perhaps your doctor willsuggest lessening the dose of the medication slowly until you have taken the Turmeric for about a month, which is when you would start to expect seeing improvement.
Curcumin - one of Turmerics active compounds blasts 'free radicals 'which are associated with the signs of ageing. As it decreases our risk of heart disease and cancer, it lengthens our lives too.
These benefits are only SOMEof the major benefits - I have noticed my hair is thicker, my knees don't creak any more, my mind is sharp, i get less fatigued :)
HOW TO USE TURMERIC
From what I have read / heard about this, there are a few 'conditions' to get the best benefits
1. The Turmeric MUST be of good quality and contain a high proportion of CURCUMIN. Some supermarket turmerics (eg spice rack variety) hardly contain any curcumin. Generally 2% curcumin or over is considered ok. i found this one which is 3.7% also available in smaller and larger quantities.
2. It must be heated /cooked for 5-10 minutes to break down the 'chains' of molecules, to allow it to be absorbed by your body. For this reason takeing capsules of raw powder probably will not have the same effects as described above
3. Even when cooked, curcumin alone is not so readily absorbed by the body, but adding FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPERCORNS means that the curcumin will be absorbed. Pat adds some pepper to the paste when she makes it and I add another couple of twists of the grinder into whatever i am taking the Turmeric paste with - eg stews, smoothies, milk - great in your morning porridge too! Adding black pepper increases its absorbtion by 1000 times!!!
4, Once made, the paste must be stored in a fridge and used within 2-3 weeks. It gets a strange metallic taste when it goes off, so you will know when this happens :)
5. Do not omit the OIL from the recipe. Oil must also be present to absorb the Curcumin. Coconut oil is antiviral and anti inflammatory so is a good oil to use. Some people use olive oil instead.
Sometimes I add ground ginger or cinnamon too.
HOW TO MAKE IT. Here is just one recipe, but you willf ind many more on the internet. Remember you must use GOOD quality Turmeric powder (High % curcumin over 2%), coconut oil and fresh ground black pepper essential. Turmeric paste will stain, so wear old clothing. Thoroughy wash the jar(s) you are using to store the Turmeric, preferably sterrilise in boiling water.
